Did Expedition 196 Make Me Feel Fulfilled?

June 29, 2018
“I Think Everybody Should Get Rich And Famous And Do Everything They Ever Dreamed Of So They Can See That It’s Not The Answer.” ― Jim Carrey
Someone recently sent me a DM on Instagram asking, “Did Expedition 196 make you feel fulfilled?”. Up until that point, I’d never been asked such a question. However, I knew the answer long before that person had even asked it. My personal definition of fulfillment I guarantee you differs from any other person you’ll ask, but since my head is running in all different sorts of directions, let’s start with the actual definition of the word.
ful·fill·ment
fo͝olˈfilmənt/
noun
  1. 1.
the achievement of something desired, promised, or predicted.
“winning the championship was the fulfillment of a childhood dream”
  2. 2.
the meeting of a requirement or condition.
    “the fulfillment of statutory requirements”
If we’re talking about simply achieving something desired or predicted, then yes, Expedition 196 did fulfill my desires, but only for a brief moment in time. I achieved what I had set my mind out to achieve, but it did not bring my “childhood dream” to life, because it wasn’t a childhood dream of mine. Expedition 196 was to be a stepping stone to my childhood dream, which, if I’m going to be vulnerable with you, was to have my own show on the Travel Channel as a “Travel Expert”. My original dream was to be a storm chaser and Meteorologist, changing the world somehow and making big discoveries. But when I failed Meteorology, Oceanography, Statistics and Geology in college, I became really deterred from a career path in Meteorology, and it really bummed me out. Then I figured I’d do something with Personal Training in the meantime, since I’d always loved the thought of becoming a Body Builder. Alas, I failed my PT math section of my test 3 times and at the time, couldn’t afford tutoring to get through it. It was at that point that I began reminiscing back to my childhood days, watching Samatha Brown on Travel Channel and wishing I would have a career like hers, while also creating meaningful change in our world (because let’s be honest, doesn’t every kid?). I dropped out of college a semester short of graduating and saved up $2,000 from Lifeguarding. My plan was to begin my “real life” university and gain worldly experience to then pursue the last career dream I had in mine, which was having my own show on the Travel Channel. I’d only traveled to Canada, Costa Rica and Nicaragua by the age of 21. In August, I took off and would spend the next 2 years traveling to roughly 25 countries and living in 9 of them. I started my own “business” called “Geo Hospitality” complete with a website that I poured any extra money I had earned into in order to be professionally developed, I created business cards, and carried a manilla folder to luxury boutique hotels. My mission was to prove to them that I could help them optimize revenues through energy efficiency measures and in exchange they’d give me room and board. You know by now that my math skills are horrendous, but thanks to Google, I was able to scrape by when it came to writing up cost-benefit analysis in order for the Management of these hotels to take my work seriously. While my backpack was back at the hostel, I would walk into the hotel with a folder and my laptop, looking professional as any backpacker could attempt to look. I would throw on a fancy scarf I bought from an outdoor market in San Francisco, and slip into my ballet flats in order to look somewhat presentable and believable. At the age of 21, I traveled the world and began to build my resumé as a Sustainability Consultant in order to gain experience as an eventual, Travel Expert, like my role model, Samantha Brown. My thought was by starting at the age of 21 and then traveling to every country, by the age of 30, I’d have my own show and feel fulfilled in my career. Unfortunately, even traveling to every country in the world and making life sacrifices, risking my life in order to get to that point, doesn’t work. Had the show been a result of my hard work and sacrifices, I would feel fulfilled from the Expedition. My early days of travel before the Expedition were days that allowed me the creative freedom and opportunity to explore the world and be nomadic. Expedition 196 was a career move and involved major investment and starting a real LLC this time. It was the most difficult, emotionally and physically taxing thing I’d ever done in my life, but having that end goal in sight was what kept me going. Now that’s it’s over and without having reached my career goal, it’s left a significant void in my life’s pursuit. I’m sharing this with you because I know many of you are interested in my true thoughts regarding the above question, and I’m not going to sugar coat how I truly feel about my accomplishments or lack thereof. I have other plans and projects that I’m working on that will enable me to continue this career path of creative freedom and travel, but I fell short of my lifetime goal, and it sucks. In order to understand this in better context, I want you to understand that most people have career goals and even if they fall short, they become “OK” with it because the greater goal as they roll into their 30’s and 40’s is to get married and have kids, or depend on a spouse for support or money. That’s not a goal of mine. This career of mine is the most important aspect of my life and since I have no interest in getting married or having kids, my focus is 100% on this.Hopefully, eventually this Expedition will make me feel fulfilled, but until then, that’s all I’ve got for you.

North Korea part 2. This was insane. North Korea part 2. This was insane.
After last year, I can’t help but seriously plan After last year, I can’t help but seriously plan. Plan not for the expected, but for the unexpected when it comes to finances, business, and even training and racing. Last year was such a massive learning curve I think, for all of us. I fell off the bandwagon and into a pretty dark place, especially in the last couple of months and even getting COVID 😖. Sometimes, all that’s needed is a little hope, which for me, comes in the form of forward thinking, planning, actionable and realistic goal-setting. And I think it’s so important to not be so hard on yourself and instead, to be kind and commit to patience.Something else that’s helped me is revamping both my office, as well as the space in my home that brings me the most peace, and that is of course my bedroom, surrounded by windows that look out to the Santa Monica Mountains ⛰. I’m so so happy to have had the opportunity to partner with @floyddetroit for this incredible walnut bed with headboard and under-bed storage (swipe 👉🏼 to see) with a super sleek and minimalistic design. I thought the perfect accent to this new bed would be a few new pieces from @the_citizenry, obsessed with their aesthetic! I snagged this gorgeous jute rug, woven bed throw and Aztec pillow to just create a warm, minimal and cozy setting. As you can see, Kish loves the new digs, too ☺️.I wouldn’t say the first bit of 2021 has been great so far, but the hope and planning is there, and there’s a lot that lies ahead. Definitely being more mindful, present, and working on self-healing as well. But seriously, go check out @floyddetroit and @the_citizenry if you’re looking for a revamp! I think we could all use a fresh start and outlook this year ✨Wearing @loversfriendsla @revolve #revolvewinter
Nothing more fitting than a moody end of year edit Nothing more fitting than a moody end of year edit with an outfit I never got to wear out due to stay at home orders. But that’s not to say I didn’t enjoy wearing it on occasion on my porch with a glass of bubbly and mi gato. Kind of enjoyed the forced solitude of this year, if we’re looking on the bright side. I needed it. Hoorah to have crossed the finish line of 2020. You deserve a drink... or a cat. ☺️🥂✨What was your favorite moment of 2020? 🤔Wearing @revolve #revolvewinter @itsnbd

I took this pic right after Ironman Florida and it I took this pic right after Ironman Florida and it was one of the last pics of me (and Kishie) living in Boulder. I was so ecstatic with having just finished my first Ironman and also with this fresh powder 🤤. I can’t be the only one who truly enjoys feeling the extreme heat and frigid cold once and awhile.Today, I was thinking about how much I miss living in Boulder during the winter months and training at RallySport. The atmosphere, the community of Boulder, was something that I had never encountered anywhere else in the world. I’m working really hard at this point in my life so that I can one day, live and train in Boulder in the fall and winter months, and CA in the spring and summer months. I’d love to be able to divide my time equally every year. While I realize that that is indeed a luxury, we also only have one life, so if we want something that bad, we might as well go after it. ♥️Sitting here with this massive Pandemic going on, with literally death and destruction all around, I’m clearly reminiscing hardcore on the good times. Reminiscing on that of freedom and exploration and, yes, knowing that my next race will be on. I miss that, among many other things, including the health and prosperity of humanity and this planet 🌎.Perhaps I’ll one day miss 2020 though, and the things I produced and ways I’d changed. The way the world sort of, woke up, on many levels, and the realizations that were unearthed. The fragility of it all and how fleeting our moments really are. Life is always bittersweet as a memory. 🌬✨
When traveling is made too easy and comfortable, i When traveling is made too easy and comfortable, its spiritual meaning is lost. This may be called sentimentalism, but a certain sense of loneliness engendered by traveling leads one to reflect upon the meaning of life, for life is after all a travelling from one unknown to another unknown. 🌑

I told myself I’d never be that 30 year old cat I told myself I’d never be that 30 year old cat lady, because society tells us “guys like girls who like dogs, not cats”. But alas, here I am at 31 with no fucks given to what some stranger deems “cool” or not 😎. My heart is full to an incredible living being that depends on me every day and who won’t make excuses to travel the world 🌏😉.And, to that, there’s something so much greater in life in becoming a wholesome individual, and it has nothing to do with what type of pet you own or whether or not you’ve graduated college. Being inspired by our own company and solidarity, I think, is so important. It’s something that took me a decade to feel fully comfortable with, but the growth has been incredible. Sometimes it takes a solo trip in nature to a new place to embrace that fire within 🍃.I was raised to realize my own capabilities and throughout my twenties and now thirties, there’ve been endless ideas that I conjure up within my mind and execute through use of my body, things that perhaps would have never come to fruition had I, for the most part, been constantly preoccupied and engaged with others ✨.By making that sacrifice at 20, by diving in head first, I was able to hone in on what mattered to me in life; create goals, and over time, churn those goals into an incredible reality and legacy 🗺.Dog man or cat lady, cat man or dog lady, true strength of character lies within. Your character is who you are in your darkest hours when you’re alone (which we’ve all had plenty of this year). What scares you and where do you find your strength to fight it? What are your dreams for yourself and the world and how will you use your body and mind to achieve them? How will you use what you have, to create a positive legacy?And... for the record, I love dogs too, and that’s why I choose getaways that are both dog AND cat friendly 🐶🐱. So, thank you to @treelinerentals for hosting @mrkishmere and I. It was this space in solitude where I was able to write and work on a project I’d been procrastinating with while in LA 📚.Do you find pleasure in solo travel? And if so, do you bring your dog or cat along? 🕊Wearing @revolve #revolve @loversfriendsla
